I’ve got five entries in the 2022 “$20 THE DRAFTERS MILLION” and twenty in the 2025 “$20 NFL Best Ball Championship MAIN EVENT,” so I pulled every roster that finished in the top 200 of each — 400 drafts total, every pick, every exact pick number — and went looking for what the people who actually cashed big were doing differently. Not projections, not a mock draft simulator: real money, real fields, real finishes.

Three seasons apart is enough time for the meta to move, so I ran both years side by side instead of pooling them. Some of what follows held steady across both fields. Some of it flipped completely.

Part 1Stacking is table stakes, not an edge

Pairing a QB with at least one pass-catcher from the same NFL team wasn’t a clever contrarian play among these rosters. It was close to universal.

The rosters with zero QB–pass-catcher stacks didn’t vanish from the leaderboard, but they clustered right at the median: unstacked teams averaged a finish of 102nd of 200 in the Drafters Million and 111th of 200 in the Main Event. Never near the top of either field.

Part 2Winners stopped fading running backs

The single biggest shift between the two fields isn’t a player — it’s how winners spent their first five picks. In 2022, benching early-round RBs was a live, winning approach. By 2025, it had all but disappeared from winning rosters.

Bar heights normalized within each archetype (the taller of the two years = 100%), so this compares 2022 vs. 2025 within a build, not across builds.

Zero-RB went from 19% of the 2022 top 200 to a single roster in the entire 2025 field. Robust-RB — three or more backs before the seventh round — went the other way, from a fringe approach (10 teams) to the second-most-common build among winners (51 teams). Within either single tournament, no build clearly out-scored the others on average. This reads like a change in what winners were willing to risk, not proof that one build scores more points.

Part 3Beating ADP mattered less than you’d think

For every one of the 400 rosters, I compared each player’s actual pick number against that player’s average pick number across all 200 same-tournament winners — a “value score” built entirely from what other winners paid, not external market ADP.

Across the full top 200, the correlation between a roster’s overall value score and its final points was effectively zero in both fields (r = 0.01 in 2022, r = −0.06 in 2025). The 2022 champion, titletown2121, built a +212-point value edge — the best of any roster in that field, by a wide margin. The 2025 champion, on the other hand, paid slightly above the winners’ own consensus for several picks. Getting a discount on paper is nice. It isn’t what separates a champion from a min-cash once your roster is already plausible.

What did correlate, weakly: more wide receivers taken in the first five picks (r = +0.19 in 2022) and fewer early running backs (r = −0.19 — the same signal from the other side). Both are real but small enough that I wouldn’t lean on either one alone.

Part 4The cheap seats had recognizable regulars

A handful of very-late picks showed up again and again across winning rosters — not injury-luck fliers, but role players a large slice of the winning field independently decided were underpriced.

A low standard deviation (Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s 3.6) means winners agreed almost exactly where to take a player. A wide one (Zay Jones’s 15.8, Sam Darnold’s 12.5) means winners found the same name useful at very different price points across 17 weeks of drafting.

Takeaways

  • 01Build at least one stack; a second one clusters with the leaders but isn’t required. Roughly 9 in 10 top-200 finishers in both fields had a QB paired with a same-team pass-catcher. Going stackless didn’t eliminate a roster’s chances, but it never showed up disproportionately near the top either.
  • 02Treat “fade RB early” as a much riskier bet today than it was in 2022. Zero-RB went from a fifth of winning rosters to statistical noise. Robust-RB is now more common among winners than Hero-RB.
  • 03Stop optimizing for ADP discounts once your roster is plausible. Draft-value score barely moved final points in either field. The champions weren’t the drafters who paid least — they picked the right players, regardless of what it cost relative to the field.
  • 04Hunt for consensus late-round role players, not specific names. Every season produces its own Zay Jones or Wan’Dale Robinson — a cheap piece a quarter of winning rosters independently land on. The pattern repeats even though the player never does.
Where this analysis can’t go

Every roster here already finished in the top 200 of a 44,000– or 119,000–entry field. Without the non-winning majority as a comparison group, these are honest descriptions of what winning rosters looked like — not proof that stacking, RB timing, or draft value caused the wins. The weak correlations above are measured only within this elite slice, which mechanically compresses them (restriction of range, for the stats-inclined). Read everything here as “what winners had in common,” not “what wins.”
